Restaurant Coulisse

Coulisse is a place where creativity and comfort come together. We provide an evening full of distinctive flavours in a totally relaxed atmosphere. We aim for the highest possible standard and make it accessible. Our menu changes with the seasons and is accompanied by a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. We call it “easy fine dining”.

The interior of the restaurant was created in collaboration with Studio Piet Boon, with a focus on natural, warm materials. The atmosphere is determined by the characteristic features of this historic building and the use of art and design.

Behind the scenes

This is where you’ll find us, Simon and Tim. After many years of working at home and abroad in restaurants such as Oud Sluis, The Jane and Noma, we are back in Amsterdam East, where we grew up. As childhood friends, we dreamt about one day running our own restaurant. And now, after a long journey of learning, gaining experience and searching for the perfect location, we have finally found our place in the beautiful NewWerktheater.

NewWerktheater

The restaurant is located in what was the lobby of the old Werkteater (now known as the NewWerktheater). Dating from 1952, this distinctive building stands between the old VOC building and the former Stork machine factory and was used as a theatre and creative space. The former foyer, located on the first floor, is a beautiful space of 175m2 and is available for Coulisse events. To honour the building’s past we have retained the name The Foyer.

Artists

The atmosphere of Coulisse is partly determined by a creative collective. We have created a distinctive experience in our space with two beautiful works by Kaspar de Jong in the restaurant, a unique canvas by Frits Berends in the private dining room and the photography of Bart Oomes. Our handmade tableware is the result of a creative collaboration with ceramicists The Bird Tsang, Keramiek Kantoor and JC Herman. Working together with creative people gives us energy and will always play a key role at Coulisse.
